The church built 1703-1760 is the best example of High Baroque in town. The altar features a lavish gold plated Nicholas, flanked by the two top Jesuits: the founder, St. Ignatius Loyola, and his missionary follower, St. Francis Xavier. This painting technique creates a play of light and dark and represents a central Baroque belief: The world is full of darkness, and only hope that makes it come alive emanates from God. The church walls seem to nearly fuse with the sky, suggesting that happenings on earth are closely connected to heaven.

Many churches host Vacation Bible School in summertime to teach kids religious stories and themes through songs and activities in a camp type setting. St. Paul United Methodist Church in Abilene, Texas has turned the VBS experience into an engaging after school program that lasts 26 weeks instead of just one. The Rev. Felicia Hopkins says hosting vacation Bible school can be expensive and offering the class free to schools reaches new families. “The kids love it. The principal says, ‘Thank you.’ The teachers stop by and say, ‘I can tell that little Johnny comes to The Jungle, its making a difference in his life,’” shares church volunteer Susan Mouser.
